Chapter History
You have to know where you’ve been to know where you are going. Kappa holds a special place in its heart for Fraternity history, but every chapter of our organization has unique beginnings of its own. Each plays a part in shaping us today. Nothing is better than KKG!
Today, there are approximately 140 Kappa Kappa Gamma chapters throughout the United States and Canada, with over 250,000 members. Our chapter at West Virginia University is called the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. It was founded on December 22, 1906 with 12 founding members; we just celebrated our 117th Anniversery in December 2023. Beta Upsilon's total number of active members and new members is approximately 135!
Every Spring, Beta Upsilon is thrilled to welcome a new member class between 20-40 girls to participate in the Kappa Kappa Gamma experience at WVU. Beginning with a variety of new member activities to get the girls well acquainted with one another and the chapter, Kappas begin to become a part of something that is more than just a sorority. Like we always say, "Kappa is not just a place, Kappa is a feeling". Over the next four years, these girls will have the chance to participate in philanthropic events, like Hoops for Hope and Kappa Kornhole which raises thousands of dollars for charity. They will have the ability to expand their leadership abilities and take on Chapter Council positions or join committees. At Beta Upsilon they will have the time of their lives experiencing unique social events such as Kappa Krush and awesome sisterhood events like tote bag painting, teddy bear making, or some coffee and donuts during finals week!
The Beta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma is a home to both WVU students that live in the house as well as those that live out. You can always find girls sitting in the dining room for meals made by our very own chef Ian or getting together with study groups for study hours at the library! The living room is never empty, girls lounge on our big comfy couches for new episodes of The Bachelor and Grey's Anatomy or to watch a movie. We also had a major renovation to our basement in the past year. We have an awesome study and lounge space with a giant flat screen TV and comfy couches.
And after the four wonderful years as a Kappa Kappa Gamma at West Virginia University are over, the experience doesn't end. Kappa Kappa Gamma has an incredibly strong alumnae base. Many alumnae stay as involved as possible, from becoming a chapter advisor to just stopping by every now and then to say hi! “Kappa is women helping women in their individual, academic and professional lives.”
